-22 F
22 BELOW Zero
No matter how it's written temperatures that cold are insane.
That's what the temperature was this morning.
So cold our thermometer, which only registers between -20 and 120 F was not registering anything at all. I had to go online to see what our local temperature was.
It took a long time for the house to warm up even with 3 heat sources attempting it. And even then it wasn't warm just not too cold. Some people had no electricity and I felt very bad for them. Apparently the outages were caused by the contracting of power lines at such cold temperatures.
We made some more pine cone, vegetable shortening and birdseed feeders for the birds. I knew they would be having a hard time in these extreme low temperatures. Lots of birds were eating from the pine cone feeders before I even finished tying them all on the tree.
This is not a great picture but the pine cone feeders are tied onto our Christmas tree which has now been placed outdoors. This is one of our traditions, after we use our Christmas tree we give it to the birds and toss things like popcorn, fruits, breads and seeds onto it. It serves as a good place to hang the pine cone feeders too.

We really need to make some pine cone feeders. Great tradition! That must be such a great thing to watch all winter. How long do you leave your tree out? It looks so green! Is it one that you planted?
The tree is not planted, it's just been moved from the tree stand in our house to the outdoors in the snow. Perhaps the cold tempertaures are preserving it? I left our tree in the house for 2 weeks this year. I will leave it outdoors near the window until spring and then will drag it into the woods to decompose.
Poor birdies.
Praying you don't get a power outage in these temps!
I think that is a fabulous way to handle your tree! We use an artificial tree so we miss out on fun things like this. (dh is not a fan of real because you constantly hear of fires on the news.) But, we plan on making some pine cone feeders this week.
I so agree on these temps. I'm ready for something warmer - say 10 or so degrees ABOVE zero!! ;-)
Oh I am SO tired of winter and cold temps!! You have us beat on cold, though. The lowest temperature we have gotten down to was -12. Of course, wind chills have been down -35. I can't even imagine what your wind chill was when your temp was -22! Ugh.
