Degu babies!

It seemed to take forever between the fact that Degu are not prolific breeders and the gestation period is 3 months but at last we have Degu babies! In all 6 babies were born, one not fully formed and not viable, one very small baby who only lived one day and 4 babies, 3 boys and one girl, who thrived and are now 3 weeks old! This has been very educational and mostly fun. Degu pups are born fully furred and their eyes open between day 1 and 2. They soon start trying to explore and taste adults food. The parents work together to raise their young and constantly try to keep the little explorers in the nest. Even at 3 weeks the babies are usually in the ever growing nest with the parents on top! Those little hooligans do escape more and more though and I'm sure soon the parents will give up and let them wander at will.
